Jon,

I am just seeking clarification on a question regarding the order in which stuff happens in the turn. In particular buying new ranks and gaining appointments...

If we take as an example the application of MR to join the King's Escort... He is currently a Private, so only eligible for Trooper. Can he apply for Ensign this month, as (assuming he has the SL & funds) then his purchase of the rank of Subaltern is unconditional?

If he can only apply for Trooper, but buys the Subalterncy (sp?), then does he become an Ensign in the escort, or does he loose the Trooper appointment before the ink is dry on the paper?! Does this then contravene the 3-month-in-an-appointment rule? Am I now more confused than ever!!

Please help!

Lois

No worries, I'll do what I can to make it clear for you...

Yes, characters may speculatively apply for appointments they don't currently have the required rank for. I always resolve applications to regiments and the purchase of ranks therein before I consider applications for appointments...

However, I don't quite understand what you mean re: "his purchase of the rank of Subaltern is unconditional?". Unless he does purchase the rank, he cannot apply as Ensign of the Escort...

Given what I've said above, this would never happen. If he did apply as a trooper but succeeded in buying the rank of SUbaltern then the latter would prevent the former. As such, it does not contravene the 3-month-in-an-appointment rule as it all happens within the pre-monthly phase, so he never even got the appointment to start with...

Thanks for that Jon.

So as a further clarification, if someone with the rank of subaltern were to make the required announcement and apply for an appointment that required the rank of Captain - this would be allowed, with the proviso that if they failed to get Captain (no available vacancies, say) then their application for the appointment would in effect have got 'lost in the post'?

Correct. They'd fail in their application, but not suffer any penalties for a failed application...
